Mont Saint-Michel

A medieval abbey-village perched on a tidal granite island off the Normandy coast, Mont Saint-Michel is France's most-visited attraction outside Paris and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Three million visitors a year compress into a site of under four square kilometres, causing daily gridlock from 10am to 4pm in peak season and prompting authorities to experiment with tiered parking charges and shuttle-bus management.

Movement through central areas is slow — expect to dodge and wait. Lines at major sights routinely exceed 1–2 hours without pre-booking. Iconic views are difficult to photograph without crowds in frame. Local residents have publicly raised concerns about visitor volume.
