Zermatt

Zermatt is a car-free Alpine resort of around 6,000 permanent residents that sits in the shadow of the Matterhorn at 1,620 metres. Almost two million visitors a year arrive by train, swelling the town to 35,000–40,000 people on peak December days and pushing water and waste infrastructure to its limits. Local hoteliers and residents have actively debated capping or taxing day-trippers, calling the scale of daytime tourism a growing burden on the community.

Movement through central areas is slow — expect to dodge and wait. Lines at major sights routinely exceed 1–2 hours without pre-booking. Iconic views are difficult to photograph without crowds in frame. Local residents have publicly raised concerns about visitor volume.
